Sewer line to city sewer
Dig a new sewer line from the back of the building to the city sewer.
Where we are: The city never came out for the smoke test. Based on what we know, the building is probably already connected to city sewer, so a new line may not be needed — worth a quick call to the city to confirm before this is closed out.
Next steps
- To doConfirm with the city: are we already on city sewer?
- To doFind out who handles sewer at 170 MS-2 NE (Corinth Gas & Water, or a county utility) and ask what a connection takes
- To doFind where the city sewer line runs behind the building (manhole, street or easement) and measure the trench length
- To doFind out what the building uses now (septic tank?) and what has to happen to it
- To doGet the connection done (licensed plumber if the city requires it) and inspected
Done (2)
- ✓DoneBefore the smoke test: run water in every drain (sinks, floor drains, baptistry drain) and tell anyone in the building
- ✓Done811 ticket for the sewer trench
The building may already be hooked up to the city sewer. The City is coming out to run a smoke test to find out. If it's connected, no new line is needed. If not, the plan is a new sewer line from the back of the building to the city sewer, dug with Rayburn's backhoe once the city approves the connection.
Who to call
| Name | Phone | Where | What / notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Corinth Gas & Water Department | (662) 286-2263 | 305 W Waldron St, Corinth | City water and sewer. Ask: do you serve 170 MS-2 NE? What's the sewer tap fee and permit? Does a licensed plumber have to make the tie-in? Inspection? They quote new tap fees in writing. |
| Mississippi 811 | 811 or (800) 227-6477 | Statewide | Locate request before digging the trench. If the sewer dig is weeks after the gravel, file a separate ticket closer to the date. |
Notes
- 811 dig safety: ✅ 811 is done for the trench too (same ticket): the City sewer line was marked in green on Oct 23. Hand-dig within 18 inches of either side of every paint line: yellow = gas, blue = water, green = sewer. If anything gets hit, call 811 first, then the utility.
- 811 dig safety: The ticket expires Mon 11/09. If the trench isn't dug by then, update it 11/3–11/4 or file a new one.
- How a smoke test works: the city blows harmless, non-toxic smoke into the sewer main. If the building is connected, smoke comes out of the vent pipes on the roof. Smoke anywhere else (in the yard or inside) shows a leak or a dry drain trap.
- Gravity sewer lines usually run 2–6 ft deep and need a steady downhill slope (about ¼ inch per foot) to the city line, so where the city line sits and how deep it is decides everything.
- If the building is on a septic tank now, the old tank is usually pumped and then filled in or removed once the city connection is live.
- Trenches deeper than 5 ft need shoring or sloped sides to be safe to stand in.
